N.W. Gradidge (Director)
He graduated from Southampton University in 1975 with an honours
degree in Civil Engineering. He worked as a site engineer until
1977 when he joined a Winchester based Consulting Engineers
practice for 10 years. This was followed by a further 10 years
working for a major consultancy practice in their Southampton
office and two years for a local practice before joining R J
Watkinson in 1999.
Nick Gradidge has gained particular experience in structural
steel and timber buildings but also has been responsible for
design of a thin shell concrete building.He has designed schools
industrial buildings, offices and been responsible for the
structural design of a major hospital redevelopment. Other recent
design work includes a 50,000 sq. ft. office development in
central Southampton, new warehouse structures in Andover and
Bordon, machine bases for heavy printing machinery and timber
repair works.
He is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institution of
Structural Engineers.

M.A. WHARF (Managing Director)
M A (MIKE) WHARF joined R J Watkinson and Partners in January
1988.
Previously he worked for a Consulting Engineer in Winchester for
eight years, followed by a nearly two year period working in the
Structural Engineer's section of the renowned Hampshire County
Architects department.
Mike is particularly interested in the design of architectural
structural steelwork and timber frameworks. He has designed
various schools for Hampshire County Architects department,
including the Queens' Inclosure Middle
School, Cowplain and Woodlea School,
at Bordon both winners of the R.I.B.A Best Building of the Year.
Other recent design work includes two seven-storey sea front
apartment blocks on the Isle of Wight, a two and three-storey
office development in Bristol and a four-storey reinforced
concrete framed records office building in Winchester.
He is a Chartered Engineer, European Engineer, Member of the
Institution of Civil Engineers and Member of the Institution of
Structural Engineers.
Mike is a keen skier, a horse rider and tennis player, with an
active role in a local tennis club.

J.W. Gill (Consultant)
J W (JIM) GILL joined the Practice in 1985 after 10 years
with a Southampton based Consulting Engineers. His early
experience was on R.C buildings, petrochemical works, prestressed
bridge structures and temporary works design with Consulting
Engineers and Local Government Departments.
He has been responsible for the design and supervision of many
buildings including schools and residential accommodation. Jim
spent two years on site supervising the construction of two major
six lane highway bridges in Bournemouth followed by five years as
a bridge design engineer. He has completed the designs for many
marina projects, including waterside buildings, quay walls,
cofferdams, hoist docks, pontoon layouts, wavescreens, piling and
dredging. Other marine projects include commercial wharfs,
docking facilities, and slipways.
More recently he has completed the designs for several major
petrochemical projects including well sites, blast resistant
buildings, pipe racks, pits, tanks and associated structures.
He is a Chartered Engineer, European Engineer, a Member of the
Institution of Structural Engineers, and a Member of the
Institution of Highways and Transportation.
Jim is Past Commodore of Hythe (Southampton) Sailing Club and is
a keen offshore cruising sailor, spending his holidays exploring
the French and English coast lines. He is a keen Francophile,
speaking near fluent French.
